What RCM Professionals Need to Know About the Latest Changes

Updated: Oct 3

As we step into the last quarter of 2024, the healthcare industry eagerly awaits the new CPT updates set to take effect on January 1, 2025. The American Medical Association’s annual updates to the CPT codes are vital for healthcare providers, payers, and revenue cycle management (RCM) professionals.

The CPT 2025 code set not only reflects recent advancements in medical technology and practices but also aims to improve patient care, streamline billing processes, and facilitate accurate reimbursement.

The latest update brings significant changes, including 270 new codes, 112 deletions, and 38 revisions. Each update impacts various specialties and services, making it imperative for healthcare professionals to stay informed.

Here's an overview of the key changes:

Evaluation and Management (E&M)

The E/M section sees the addition of 17 new codes and updated guidelines for reporting telemedicine E/M office visits. As healthcare continues to embrace telehealth services, these new codes will provide clarity and consistency in billing practices. It's important to note that telephone E/M codes (99441-99443) will be deleted.

Surgery

The surgery section introduces 33 new codes covering various procedures, including skin grafts, tumor elimination, autografts, and arthroplasty.

Radiology

Radiology is witnessing considerable advancements with six new codes related to MR safety implants (76014-76019). Additionally, the update includes codes for MRI-monitored transurethral ultrasound ablation prostate (TULSA), transcranial Doppler, and other cutting-edge imaging techniques.

Pathology and Laboratory

Pathology and laboratory professionals will see the introduction of 13 new codes, including 81195 for reporting cytogenomic analyses. Staying abreast of these changes can help avoid reimbursement delays and ensure precise reporting.

Medicine

The medicine section has seen the deletion of older COVID-19 vaccine codes, reflecting the evolving landscape of pandemic-related healthcare services. Furthermore, the remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) codes (98975-98978) have been revised to include device supply and digital therapeutic intervention for RTM.

AI Taxonomy

Introduced in 2023, the AMA’s AI Taxonomy is evolving rapidly. The 2025 CPT code set introduces seven new category III codes for AI augmentative data analysis. This includes codes for AI-assisted electrocardiogram measurements (0902T and 0932T), medical chest imaging (0877T-0880T), and image-guided prostate biopsy (0898T). These additions aim to better capture the role of AI in modern healthcare services.
